Bowel preparation is critical to a successful colonoscopy. Can the delivery of bowel preparation instructions via a mobile social media app improve bowel preparation?
In a study by Kang X et al, 770 patients were assigned to standard education along with delivery of interactive information via Wechat (n=387) or standard education (n=383). Bowel preparation was rated using the Ottawa scoring system.
The result: Compared to standard education, the group that received social media instructions had more adequate bowel preparation (82.2% vs. 69.5%, p<.001); more cecal intubation (97.2% vs. 93.2%, p=.014); and more adenomatous polyps detected (18.6% vs. 12.0%, p=.012).
Take Home Point: Interactive instructional messages via a mobile social media app can improve bowel preparation for colonoscopy.
